Remember That Alaska Trip?

As you may remember, back in 2013, I took a month long ride up to Alaska on my motorcycle.  And my intention was to document and share my experience along the way.  But something got into the way and the documentation and sharing just didn’t seem to work.

As a budding travel video photographer, or maybe a v-logger, I soon learned a few things.  One, 30 days is not near enough time to travel up to Alaska and back on a motorcycle if you plan on taking in the sites along the way.  There simply is not enough time.  Second, trying to capture the essence of your ride when you are scurrying about traveling so many miles a day is difficult.

Sure at the beginning things started out just fine.  But soon I discovered that I was not able to provide the type of coverage I had intended.  I was too busy traveling to pay a lot of attention to the photography and video.  And when I tried to pay attention to those things, then I did not travel very far.

Don’t get me wrong, I did record a lot of the trip.  But I could not find the time to report back with live updates as I wanted.  After all, anyone with experience with such things knows it takes a lot of time to deal with all the pictures and videos, and editing and blogging and, well you get the idea.

To add to the issues, my camera’s batteries always needed attending to.  Even the ones tied into my bike’s electrical system still seemed to always have issues.  Lots of babysitting of technology along the way.  And it always seemed to fail at just the wrong time.

To make matters worse, I was on a time schedule that had very little flexibility.  I had a tour set up at the Arctic Ocean and I needed to be back down into the States by a certain date to meet my wife and attend the BMW MOA Rally in Salem, Oregon.  So I was more than a bit rushed.

So after a while, I gave up the daily updates.  And I even remember telling my wife on the phone one time while I was in Fairbanks Alaska, that this trip had become a bit of a reconnaissance trip and that I would now need to come back up for a longer period to do any video justice.

So fast forward to now, near the end of 2015.  And after much thought about how I should go about presenting my story on 2013, I believe the story to be told, is more of what to expect should you, the reader or viewer decide to take such a trip.  What to expect, what not to expect, how long it really takes to do such a trip, and such things.

So keep an eye out for new presentations as I work to put a little show together to help you understand just what it is like to ride your motorcycle to Alaska.  Until then, ride safe.

Running Low On Fuel On the Dalton Highway

My first day in Alaska, I decide to ride up to the Arctic Circle on the Dalton Highway to take pictures. I want to get fuel about halfway up to the Circle at the Yukon River Camp. So do eleven other riders who arrive shortly after I do. None of us know each other. Some are heading North to the Arctic Ocean. Some are heading South coming from the Ocean. Now we all need to ride together so we all can get safely back to Fairbanks and refuel our bikes.

Day 3 – On My Way To Alaska

Day 3 – Boom Town USA


So my plan for the day 3 was to ride west on Highway 2 from Grand Forks, ND to Havre, MT, a distance of about 630 miles.  And I might have done it.  I should have been able to do it.  It was about an 11 hour ride.  But, I didn’t leave Grand Forks until nearly 9:30.  And the usual delays each time I stopped for food or gas set me back also.



After leaving the Geographical Center of North America Monument, riding Highway 2 across North Dakota for the rest of the afternoon was pretty much uneventful.  That is until I began to get close to the Montana border and the town of Williston.  I began to see a lot of pickup trucks with license plates from all over the place, especially Texas.  And based upon the signs pasted on the sides of the trucks, they appeared to be associated with oil-field work.  Lots of semi trucks too. Some were dump trucks and some were tanker type.  But all of them had one thing in common.  They were absolutely filthy dirty.

The roadway soon began to show signs that something was up too.  What had been a nice smooth four-lane highway where I traveled along at 70-75 mph, had begun to show signs of degradation.  The road was falling apart.  And there was road construction everywhere.  Not new roads, just total replacement of the existing roadway.  In some places, the speed limit was 15 mph.  Smooth blacktop was replaced with gravel in some places.  Dust was everywhere.  Traffic was too.

I also began to see what I believed to be portable or maybe temporary housing.  These are known as man camps.  Most were single-story units, maybe a hundred or more, set up like a little subdivision.  And then there were a few others, right out in the middle of nowhere, which would be more like a hotel-looking structure.  Except they appeared to be stacks of those big containers you see on ocean going ships hauling goods back and forth across the ocean.  A few of them were stacked maybe five high, and rows of them all ganged together.  I would say that many were simply manufactured housing projects still incomplete.  There would be a staircase constructed on one end.  And these “containers” seemed to have been converted into little apartments.  And school buses would appear hauling workers between these man camps and the oil fields.

There seems to be many of these “hotels”.  Not just two or three.  I’m sure I saw at least ten or maybe even more.  There did not seem to be any stores, restaurants or such.  Just these hotel-like structures.  And lots of wind and dust.  This was the placed I had been warned about.  Williston, North Dakota.  Ground zero for America’s new-found oil boom.  Fracking.  That is what they call it.  And they are doing a lot of it here.

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about fracking.  Or even this area of the country.  But I will give you a brief overview of what I saw and learned.

Fracking is basically the pumping of lots of hot water, with some other chemicals into the ground where known oil reserves are located, but trapped in layers of rock.  The hot water and chemicals are pumped into the ground, breaking, or cracking the rock formations.  Then the oil works it way  up through pipes to the surface.  There is really a lot more science to it, but this is the general idea.  With oil now staying near or above $100 per barrel, the technology used in fracking becomes economical enough to warrant using the process to get to the oil.  And there is a lot of oil.

I was told that these wells, once they become operational, may run as long as 40 years.  And that with this technology, we now have access to so much oil, we are now considered to have more accessible oil than the Middle East.  And as long as oil prices stay at least where they are now, it is profitable to go after it.

Each new oil well will require 2,000 semi-trucks to haul materials to and from the well before it begins to produce.  There could be thousands of these wells installed.  10’s of thousands I was told.  I don’t know if that is true, but that does sound like a lot of oil to me.  And a lot of trucks and people involved in the process.

So Wiliston, North Dakota is the equivalent of what we would call a boom town.  Thousands of people have come to work because the pay for many jobs is nearly $100,000 per year.  Some think they are going to get rich working for the oil companies.  But rent alone in these man camps is something like $750 per week.  So I doubt many are getting ahead.  But enough about fracking.  Back to the trip.

As I previously said, I only made it to Glasgow, Montana, about 480 miles ride for the day.  It was getting dark.  I was riding across various Indian reservations, which don’t have much of any services available.  Hotels seemed to all be full.  And due to where I was riding, it was recommended to me that I not ride on to Havre as the roads are not safe at night due to the abundance of animals on the road.

So when I saw a billboard sign for a hotel in Glasgow called the Cottonwood Inn, I decided I better stop to see if I could get a room.  As it was, of the 146 rooms they had, only one room was available.  And there was a big reason why it was still available.  The lady behind the desk said it was a smoking room.  I said if I can have it, I will take it.  She said, and I quote “ Honey, maybe you should go down and take a look at it before you say that.  It really does have a strong smoker’s odor.”  I assured her that I could handle it.  And with that the room was mine.

Back out to the bike with one of those carts to unload the bike.  I pulled off two tires, the BMW bag, two side panniers, the top box, two luggage bags, the tank bag, and headed back into the hotel.  This was now the third night of unloading the bike and I was beginning to get quite fast at it.

Well she was not stretching the truth any.  I could hardly breathe when I stepped into that room.  WOW!  I didn’t know smokers could ruin a room so badly.  I honestly did think that maybe I would be better off just sleeping outdoors with the bike in the parking lot.  And I probably should have.  But it was supposed to storm and lightning had been flashing to the west when I pulled into the hotel.  So I toughed it out.  But in the morning, I told the hotel clerk I should have gotten a medal or something for staying all night in that room.

Alaska 2013: Days 2 & 3 – Riding Across the Northern Plains

If Day 1 had been uneventful, Day 2 was even more so.  In fact, it was so uneventful, I can describe it in one sentence.  One that many a rider will recognize:  Eat, sleep, ride, repeat.  Well, here, let’s take a look together.

   And now I’m in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  That was easy.  Let’s see what Day 3 has in store.

Now Day 3 has me traveling from Grand Forks, North Dakota to Havre, Montana.  I am finally going to get to ride on Highway 2.  I’ve looked forward to riding Highway 2 for a long time.  It is the northern-most east-west highway in the United States, spanning over 2,500 miles.  It basically runs from the state of Maine all the way to the state of Washington.  It is mostly a divided highway, four lanes in all.  And looking at it on a map, I imagined it to be a whole lot more exciting than it really is.

I guess I imagined the scenery would gradually change as I left the land of a 10,000 lakes and rode west towards the land of big sky and later the Rocky Mountains.  Across North Dakota, I imagined fields of wheat, golden in color, gently waving back and forth in the gentle breeze.  All amber waves of grain or however that phrase goes.  Nothing holding me back.  Just a relaxing ride enjoying the scenery and thinking about the fact that for the next 30 days, I was on my own, just me and my motorbike.  And I was riding to Alaska.  Yea, Alaska!  How cool is that?  How many people can say they did that?  How long have I waited to do this?  And now I was actually doing it.  And today would be the first day where I actually felt like I was on the trip.  The scenery would be changing.   The speed limit was 70 mph.  And besides, today I would be visiting my first landmark stop:  the Geographical Center of North America.  How exciting is that!

S1020011Highway 2.  Well, okay, maybe not to you, but as a traveler, I would now be able to check that one off my bucket list.  I have been on the highest paved road in North America.  I hope to ride to the northernmost point on a continuous road in North America on this trip.  I hope to hit the westernmost continuous road in North America also while I’m in Alaska.  Of course I have already been to the four corners in the southwestern area of the US.

Oh, I screwed up yesterday!  I forgot I wanted to check out the 2,063 foot tall KVLY-TV Antenna, the tallest man-made structure in the western hemisphere and the third tallest structure in the world.  Yep, a TV tower in North Dakota.  Road trip – for another day.  Sigh.

I know your jealous of my being able to check out all of these fascinating places.  I’m sure they’re on your bucket list, aren’t they?  Yep, I’m livin’ large.   Okay, maybe not.  Well, let’s take a look at my visit to the Geographical Center of North America Monument.

S1020010The monument is right off of Highway 2 in Rugby, North Dakota, in the middle of a parking lot of some type of store.  I say some type, because currently there is no active business in the building.  But none the less, this is a pretty popular landmark.  And I bet you might not have even heard of it.

My plan was to zip in, take a picture or two, hop back on the bike and continue on my merry way.  But as I pulled into the parking lot where the monument is situated I see a bus with about 15 people mulling around it.  They are from Florida.  They are missionaries who come up here each year to visit some of the Indian reservations that populate the area.  I didn’t take any pictures of them for myself, but I did take a picture of all of them together with their camera.  This would be a common theme throughout this trip.  I take pictures for other people, but don’t take pictures of them for myself.

Alright, side bar time.  Those of you who know me know that I’ve not been one for taking a lot of vacations.  I usually go on one about every ten years.  So the last couple of years I have begun trying to take more.  But this whole taking pictures of other people whilst on my vacation is alien to me.  Yet, when I look at other traveler’s pictures, I see lots of pictures of them, or pictures of them meeting other people, or just other people.  And a few scenery type pictures are thrown in as well.  My vacation pictures are the opposite.  Scenery pictures, and if someone else shows up in a picture, well they must have slipped in when I wasn’t paying attention.  I think I better work on that a bit. 

Meanwhile, back at the monument, I’m getting these bus people on their way.  I wave goodbye, and begin unloading camera equipment from the bike.  Tripod, DSLR, lens for DSLR, filter, etc.  Here comes a guy on a Harley.  He parks right next to my bike, which I have just relocated to front of the monument for my picture.  Now he’s getting on his cellphone and talking to someone.  I don’t want him in my picture.  Why did he park next to my bike?

So picture taking is once again on hold while I figure out what to do with him.  Along comes two other guys on Harleys.  Now we’re all parked in front of the monument.  Do I take a picture of that?  No!  Now a car shows up and a family hops out and is wandering all around.  They eventually all end up standing with us bikers, assuming we all know each other, and asking us questions about where we’re going, coming from, how long have we been on the road, etc.

Now you might think that I was getting frustrated with all of this.  Afterall, I just wanted to get my picture and move on.  But you would be wrong.  This is exactly why I like to travel by motorbike.  People approach you and you get to meet all kinds of interesting people and hear their stories as well. And this was in my mind as we all stood around, laughing at the fact that we were all standing in front of a monument that is incorrectly placed at the geographical center of North America.  And we came here on purpose!  I was enjoying this immensely.GEO ND_2

Side bar – again.  So let’s get this straight.  I’m on a trip.  I stop at the monument to take a picture.  In the process, I meet all these other people.  The meeting of the people becomes the story.  Not my picture of me standing in front of the monument.  I should have pictures of all of these people to share with you.  But I don’t.  So since I did not take pictures of my fellow riders, or anyone else for that matter, I will share one story with you from one of the riders.

Back to the monument.  This fellow is from near Anchorage, Alaska.  Did I tell you I’m really bad with remembering names too?  He had decided to buy a Harley.  He found one in Florida.  He is a truck driver.  So he drove his truck to Florida, picked up his bike, and was now riding it back to home in Alaska.  He then would be riding back down to Florida with another truck driver and picking up his truck to drive back home in Alaska.  Huh?

Now I’m not going to ask a lot of questions here, but you gotta wonder just how much money did this guy spend on fuel to drive his semi-truck to Florida and ride the bike back to Alaska.  Then he is going head back down to Florida and drive his semi truck back to Alaska.  And this was a used Harley, not a new one.  Didn’t seem to be anything special about it.  He did take a picture of me at the monument.  Here it is.I hope he rides his bike better than he takes pictures.


So I finally did get my pictures at the monument.

We all rode across the street to a local gas station to grab a drink together where we met up with a couple other riders on Honda Goldwings, coming from Alaska.  As we all stood around and got aquainted we began discussing the Dalton Highway.  These two Goldwing boys had just been up that way.  Well, they had ridden up to the Arctic Circle anyway.  Seems there might be some issues on the Dalton I might need be aware of.

They said it was caused by global warming.  Maybe it was just springtime in Alaska.  But either way, the road was a bit unfriendly.  Or at least that is what they had heard.  All was fine until you got north of Coldfoot.  Then it went rapidly downhill.  Water standing on the road.  Roadway slick as snot.  Road being torn up and re-graded.  Long waits for escort trucks to take you through the construction.  There was even word that people on big bikes were being advised not to ride north of Coldfoot.  The traveling was just too difficult on big bikes.  And guys on small bikes said it was the worst they’d seen in years.  All in all, a lot of doom and gloom.  And I needed to ride this rode to get to Deadhorse.

Deadhorse.  What is it?  Where is it?  Well obviously it is in Alaska since this blog is about my ride to Alaska.  If you want to know a lot about Deadhorse, check it out on the internet.  I don’t want to bore you with the details.  But this destination, is on many motorcycle rider’s bucket lists.  Why?  Because it is not an easy place to ride a motorbike.

If you are going to ride a motorbike to northern Alaska, the roads you have to choose from are only going to be one:  the Dalton Highway.  Maybe you know it as the Haul Road if you’re a fan of the TV Show Ice Road Truckers.  This road is 413 miles long.  It is built upon the permafrost.  Much of it is gravel.  Its sole purpose is to provide a supply route to and from Prudhoe Bay, one of the largest oil reserves in the United States.

Along the Dalton Highway runs the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.  It runs from Prudhoe Bay all the way south to Valdez, Alaska.  Just over 800 miles.  Part of it is underground.  But most of it is above ground.  It is one of the world’s longest pipelines.  It has carried over 26 billion barrels of oil since it was completed in 1977.  But the pipeline is just part of the enticement of riding the Dalton.

This road is considered one of, if not the, most dangerous road in the United States, and likely, the whole of North America.  I will tell you more about it later.  But for now consider this.  413 miles long.  Only two locations to get fuel should you need it.  Same with food or other supplies.  No cellphone service.  If you breakdown, you are on your own against brown, black and grizzly bears, moose, and other wild animals.  You have virtually no contact with the outside world while you travel it.  The main traffic is huge semi trucks hauling supplies to and from Prudhoe Bay.  And they aren’t likely to stop and help you if you break down.

And then there is the weather.  It’s Alaska!  It rains a lot.  Snows a lot.  It really can be a bit challenging some of the time.  And cold too.  Some of the world’s coldest temperatures ever recorded have been recorded near the Dalton.   So if you have your rain suit, gloves, some boots, and maybe a coat and hat, let’s get back to my trip.

There is a small window of about six weeks when the weather is most favorable for motorbike riders who choose to take on the Dalton.  Mid-June to Mid July.  Actually, the best time is about the last week of June or first week of July.  Before that, you will be fighting snow.  After that, you will be fighting the rainy season, which makes the road nearly impassable on motorbikes.  Oh, there is also the mosquitos, or mozzies as many call them.  They are big, and there are many.  More on that later too.

So after hearing the horrors stories from these two fellows, I decided to just file that information in the back of my brain and continue onward.  If I ran into problems up north, I would deal with them as I came upon them.  But for now, I am going to refill my water bottle and hit the road.  I’ve got 637 miles to cover today and I’m not even half-way yet.  But I have another surprise coming up later today.  And I will discuss that in my next blog.

Time For a Little Planning

Now I have friends and acquaintances that have sold everything, quit their jobs, and just travel the world on their motorbikes.  One couple in particular, just celebrated ten years on the road.  And I think that if I were a cat who had nine lives, at least one of them would include that life.  But I’m not a cat.

I also have friends who have done something similar, but for shorter periods of time, such as maybe a year to a few years.  Again, the cat comes to mind.  But, I still haven’t figured out how to become a cat, if a cat really has nine lives, and if I were a cat, would I be able to travel around the world on a motorbike.

Like I said, before, I’m more like the average joe.  I have a wife, kids, a job, mortgage, and all the trappings of a typical middle-aged American.  Even If I wanted to do so, I don’t think the family would want me to just quit my job, sell off my belongings, and maybe theirs too, and take off on the motorbike for a long period of time. In fact, I’m pretty sure when I came back, they would be nowhere to be found.  Or at least they wouldn’t be too excited to see me again.  So however I’m going to do this, I better keep my family in mind.  And besides, what would become of me in my old age if I have no home or family to come back to.  Maybe I better do some thinking.

After thinking about all of this, I decided that for me, my trips needed to in the range of 30-60 days.  I could still work, but take off time for the trip.  My family wouldn’t leave me.  And I would always have a home base to come back to.  Also, and I think this is important, at least for me, is that with keeping my trips shorter, I would not have trouble acclimating back to my “normal” life after being out on the road.  This may sound strange, but I am writing this after my trip to Alaska, where I was “away” from the day to day life I’m used to for nearly a month.  And even in just that short of time, going back to the “normal” life took a few days to adjust back to.  And I have friends who after a few years on the road, say they gave up trying to ever adjust back and some have had a difficult time at best.   So enough about the background stuff.  Let’s get the trip started.

Day 1 – Leaving Home

As usual, things don’t always go as planned.  Originally, I was to leave home around 8:30 in the morning and ride over to Le Claire, Iowa, where I would stop off at the American Pickers Shop and do a video of the visit.  But at the last minute, the History Channel changed their shooting schedule to my day, and theirs takes precedence over mine.  So no American Pickers video for this trip.  Not having to be there at 10:00 am, meant I could just leave a bit later.  And so it was nearly 10:00 am before I got on the road.

Day one was really pretty uneventful.  I planned to ride to St.Paul, Minnesota for the first night.  No special route was planned.  I would just wing it along the way.  But I thought a stop at the self-proclaimed world’s largest truckstop in Walcott, Iowa might be a good place for lunch, so I headed off towards there.

I took some time to look around, and of course have a bite to eat.  I also had plenty of company.  Everyone from Harley riders to an older retired couple who used to ride had to stop by and talk with me.

I eventually got away from all the curious onlookers and made my way over to the gas pumps where what else, more people came over to find out where I was headed or from where I came.  This would be a common theme throughout the trip.  When the bike is loaded up like it was, it attracts people of all ages like a magnet.

Speaking of bike, in the previous video, you might have noticed how I had my tires mounted on the back of the bike.  They were hanging over the top box.  Hanging over a bit too much.  That first day, they proved that to me over and over, as the bike was a bit light in the front end.  I actually pulled the front wheel off the ground while passing a bit too aggressively on the interstate.  So the next day, I figured out how to mount them a bit more forward, which made all the difference in the world.

So like I said, day one was pretty uneventful.  Well, that is if you don’t count the guy who mooned me while passing me on the interstate.  Oh, and the girl, riding passenger with another gal, who decided to show me her breasts.  Actually, she only partially showed them to me.  I think she chickened-out at the last moment.  So not full exposure, just a partial.  Both events were not recorded with the GoPro.  Although I was in photo-mode, and easily could have just reached over and hit the remote control and taken a picture, I didn’t think of it until it was too late.

I had lots of people who gave me the thumbs up, as well as other types of signals that all appeared to show appreciation for what it appeared to them I was doing.  Taking a trip on my motorbike.  Well, maybe not.  Maybe it was the GoPro Camera mounted on my helmet that had them thinking they would be the next video star on Youtube or something.

In the past, when wearing the GoPro on my Helmet, I’ve had people chase me down and ask me if I work for Google Earth.  Actually, I once passed a Google Earth car in Peoria while wearing the camera.  I was not filming at the time, I have no idea if they were either.  Maybe I should check that out some day.

Onward I Travel

So the plan is to ride north from St. Paul, Minnesota up to Grand Forks, ND where I catch Highway 2.  Take Highway 2 through North Dakota, and then mostly across Montana.  Then turn north on 15 and take that across the border into Canada.  I tell you this is the plan because just prior to my trip, Alberta, Canada suffered some of the worst flooding they have ever experienced.  Nearly 100,000 people were evacuated from Calgery alone.  And all the main roads suffered damage or in many cases, total shutdown as the bridges were washed out.

In the United States, this closing of roads is not a big deal.  We’ll just take another one.  But outside of our country, especially in the mountains, such a luxury may not be so likely.  So based upon my observations in the news, along with a few conversations with people traveling up in that area, it sounded a bit bleak that I might be able to actually travel in that area of the country.  And I had planned to ride the Icefields Parkway and stay in Lake Louise, Alberta.  Now it sounded as though I might not be able to get there.  Word was that the only way into and out of Baniff was by helicopter!

So as I traveled across Highway 2, I kept one eye on the road and one eye on the news regarding travel in that part of Canada.  I really wanted to ride the Icefields Parkway.  Would I be able to actually even get to the Parkway?  And if not, what route then do I take to get to Alaska.  This wasn’t some small area affected by a little flood.  This is more like if I can’t travel up through what is called the eastern access to Alaska, I might have to stay in the States, ride all the way to the coast and enter into Canada through Vancouver, British Columbia.  And that would total upset my travel schedule.  In my next installment, I will cover the ride across Highway 2 and my decision of what route to take into Canada due to all of the flooding.

Let’s Talk About My Trip To Alaska


Hello Everyone and welcome to my post-trip blog about my recent motorcycle trip to Alaska and back.  In order to get things up and going as soon as possible, and to make it a bit easier for you the viewer to digest my presentation, I will break it up into parts.  I have decided to try and make the presentation slightly more brief than originally planned.  But then again, I thought I would be able to do a lot of “presenting along the way”.  Boy was I wrong.  So here goes.

The Big Picture

On June 27th, 2013, I left my home in Central Illinois on my 2009 BMW 1200GSA motorcycle for a 30-day trip that would see me travel by road as far north as is possible in North America, then head down to Salem, Oregon to participate in the 41st BMW MOA International Motorcycle Rally.  Finally I would travel south along the western coast of the United States down to San Diego, California.  After that, it would be off to Alamogordo, New Mexico to say hi to my father.  Then on east towards Fayetteville, Arkansas to visit with some relatives before turning north and arriving back home.

Now to be frank, this was a bit ambitious.  After all, it had originally been planned as a 60 day trip.  60 days of just me and my BMW, traveling a little over 12,000 miles, taking in the many different sights, smells, and experiences that go along with motorcycle travel.  And don’t forget the many different people I would meet along the way

A Little About Me

Before I get into the meat of this trip, the first of many to be undertaken by me, I would like to spend a little time explaining why I chose to travel by motorbike.  I apologize in advance if I bore some of you.  But many people have asked me why I have chosen to do this.  So I will try to be brief.

Motorcycles are not new to me.  I first began riding back in 1968.  I took my first cross-country tour in 1982.  I still own that bike.  Actually, as I write this, I now own six motorbikes.  Each has a specific purpose in life.  Think of them as shoes.  How many different types do you wear?  So let’s talk about why I want to travel by motorbike.

There simply is no other way to travel if you really want to experience the real world.  Yes, you can travel by the plane, train, or automobile.  But in doing so, you in fact isolating yourself from the very things that make the travel experience, well, an  experience.    Someone once said something along the lines of “Travel by car is like watching a movie.  Travel by motorcycle is like being in that movie.”  When you travel by motorbike, people seem to be drawn to you.  They see you as possibly somewhat vulnerable.  Maybe you need help figuring out where to go next.  Maybe they are locals.  Maybe not.  Either way, they think they can offer help or information.  And so they approach you.

Then of course there is the motorbike.  When they see the bike all loaded down, they know you are coming from somewhere and heading somewhere.  And while that is true in any mode of travel you may choose, a motorcycle adds a whole new dimension to travel.  And people know it.  To many, you are an adventurer.  Not afraid to take on the elements as you travel around the globe.  Someone who will have travel tales to tell.   Someone who I living the dream.  Maybe someone who is living their dream.

Many people dream about just hopping on a motorbike and heading off on a journey somewhere.  But there are hundreds of excuses, oh excuse me, reasons, why they don’t do so.  I won’t go into all the reasons.  I know many of them myself first hand.   So when suddenly you just magically appear, right in front of them, they just have to talk to you.  They want to find out where your going, where you’ve been, and what it’s like to be able to just take off and seemingly leave all the troubles of the daily grind behind.  Ask any motorbike traveler about something as simple as refueling at a gas station.  It’s impossible not to have people approach you if your bike is all loaded down with panniers, bags, spare tyres, etc.

I’m one of those people who decided it was time to get back on the bike and travel.  Like I said before, I know of all the excuses why I could not do this.  I have a full time job.  I have a wife and family at home.  I have financial obligations.  Where does the money come from to finance such a trip.  What if this happens, or maybe that.  The list goes on and on.

But the facts are this:  I’m not getting any younger.  And far too many people I know have suddenly become ill and passed away.  If I don’t start traveling now, when will I?  Or maybe the question is will I be able to?  As far as I know, I only get one shot at life.  Maybe it’s time to evaluate my situation in life.  If I really want to travel, there’s no time like the present to get going.  And my first trip would be to travel to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

Supposedly, Mark Twain once said “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”  I have no idea if he really said that, but it sure makes sense to me.  I have lots of other sayings I could repeat here.  But the bottom line is this:  it’s simply time to do it.  So let’s get started!  There’s no better time than the present.  So in my next installment, I will go into the why and how I chose the timing of my trip.
