Hi Mike. I have lots of different size bikes. And each serves a specific purpose. I really don’t think there is a perfect bike for all occasions. So ask yourself what you intend to do with the bike. Why do you want to get rid of the vt700? If you want to do some traveling, I can understand wanting a different type of bike. But I could see going on short rides like from Vegas to the Grand Cnyon on it. Just not going to have much room to carry anything with you.
Look at duel-sport bikes. I have a BMW 700GS and I like it a lot. It is light in weight, has the factory lowered suspension, has a peppy two-cylinder engine, gets good gas mileage, and it has panniers to carry all my stuff.
Look at KTM’s. How about a Yamaha Tenere? Suzuki V-strom 650. Or if you can afford a new bike, Suzuki V-strom 1000. At $13,000, it will do anything you want to do. Suzuki just gave one to a friend of mine and he put 17,000 miles on riding all over the US, including Alaska.
check out those bikes. And keep me informed of your plans. I am in the middle of a major house remodel and have not had any free time to update this site. I’ve still got the Alaska trip to finish and I have at least one other trip to add as well.
